A young hippo managed to successfully scare a herd of buffalo from drinking from his side of the watering hole.

Avid wildlife documenter Edrich Schafer described the scene as: “Suddenly the hippo bursts out of the water towards the buffalo to make his intentions clear. The female buffalo got a fright and quickly backed up away from the water,”

“This young male hippo was letting the buffalo know to stay clear from his water over which they are all so possessive. The buffalo then decided to join the other buffalo to drink a little further away from the grumpy aquatic creatures,” Schafer continued.

The clip was filmed in Kruger National Park on September 30.

While on safari in Kruger National Park we stopped to watch a herd of buffalo coming down a river bank to drink water during an extremely hot day. Temperatures exceeded forty degrees Celsius on this day. The buffalo came from far and they were thirsty. At the same time there was a small family of hippo lying in the water. The hippo is known as one of Africa’s most dangerous mammals and the animal that kills the most humans on the continent yearly. Hippos are extremely territorial and very possessive of the water areas they live in, especially in the dry season when their water habitats shrink by the day. The video shows how one buffalo cow slowly approaches the water for a drink. Among the members of the hippo family was one specific young male calf that clearly did not like the presence of the buffalo and believed that it was his duty to protect his area of water. The young hippo was almost half the size of the buffalo. That did not seem to bother the fearless young bull hippo, shaking his head around in the water in a threatening manner. Suddenly he bursts out of the water towards the buffalo to make his intensions clear. The female buffalo got a fright and quickly backed up away from the water, looking at the young hippo all confused. This young male hippo was letting the buffalo know to stay clear from his water over which they are all so possessive. The buffalo then decided to join the other buffalo to drink a little further away from the grumpy aquatic creatures. Finally the buffalo cow could have her long awaited drink of water.
