Daring bird quickly grabs a snack next to crocodile's nose
We were spending a few hours sitting inside a bird hide next to a river in the Kruger National Park. It was just before sunrise and the birdlife was prolific. Suddenly one specific bird caught my attention. This white bird on long black legs with yellow feet is called the little egret. The word little might be in the name but there was nothing little when it came to this specific bird’s behaviour. The egrets are always found near water bodies where they spend their time in the shallows feeding on fish and other aquatic prey. On this day there was a huge crocodile lying on the bank in the shallow waters. While the bird was feeding along the river edge, it eventually came close the crocodile. Then the bird noticed a tempting meal that it could not resist even though it was in the water right next to the head of the large croc. It was clear that the bird was well aware of the danger lying in front of it. On the first attempt to grab the snack the bird seemed unsure and hesitatingly pulled back. The bird waited for a short while bit gaining more courage. On the second attempt the bird approached the crocodile slowly and very carefully. Suddenly the egret strikes at the water at lightning speed, right next to the nose of the crocodile and snatches his much desired snack. It clearly must have been a quality snack to make such a daring catch. This was the only crocodile in sight and the bird had a huge stretch of riverbed bank without crocs to feed on. Luckily on this day the big crocodile was extremely placid and did not move at all. It eventually disappeared back into the water.
