Three Great Egrets (or Great White Egrets) Ardea alba have recently taken up temporary residence at a site in Dorset. This film shows two of them. This stunning (very) long-necked heron is showing signs of becoming established in the UK as a breeding species, following closely in the footsteps of the Little Egret Egretta garzetta. Western Cattle Egrets Bubulcus ibis and Eurasian Spoonbills Platalea leucorodia are showing similar interest and UK sightings are more frequent than they used to be during an exciting and dynamic time for ornithologists. All are very welcome and beautiful additions to the British avifauna although they will not thrive unless they are able to find enough suitable habitat. However, as these population expansions may well be occurring in response to global warming there may be long-term consequences and repercussions for some of the more northerly inhabitants of the British Isles associated with climate change, and in particular those that may be affected by an increase in sea temperatures.
