Brazilians took to the streets of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro to celebrate candidate Jair Bolsonaro's victory in the presidential elections on Sunday, October 28.

This video shows supporters clapping and cheering while waving Brazilian flags that night after the results were declared.

The right-wing politician, campaigning on a promise to eradicate corruption and to drive down Brazil's high crime levels. won 55% of the votes over Fernando Haddad.

"The commitment I assumed with the Brazilian people was to create a decent government, committed to the country and the people. And I guarantee you that I will, Bolsonaro said in his speech. "We will change Brazil's destiny together."

His victory constitutes a markedly rightwards swing in the largest democracy in Latin America, which was governed by the left-wing Workers' Party for 13 years between 2003 and 2016.
