The beautiful Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) is the only Swan native to Australia and is mostly found in the southeast and southwest of the continent. Black Swans are monogamous and usually breed in permanent, well-vegetated wetlands. This pair of Black Swans raised their clutch of four cygnets, successfully protecting them from an attacking Australian Raven in late August. By the end of October, the four cygnets have grown, and are now nearly as big as their parents. They were feeding themselves on a floating mat of nutritious Duckweed on Herdsman Lake near Perth in Western Australia. This relaxed cygnet was gobbling up duckweed while resting one leg on its back!
