European Yellow tailed Scorpions Euscorpius flavicaudis in the Ardeche, South of France

These European Yellow-tailed Scorpions Euscorpius flavicaudus were found in the Ardèche, South of France and it was the first time that I had encountered them in the wild. The first one that I spotted (a day earlier) ran for cover as soon as I pointed a torch in its direction and I thought that I had missed my opportunity to film or photograph these fascinating creatures. Fortunately I located an artificial rocky structure where several could be found and as they seem to occupy the same burrows each night they were relatively easy to relocate and film - provided that they didn't run away when lit. Some individuals seemed to be more photophobic than others. Filming was slightly awkward as I was standing on a slope with loose stones under my feet and there wasn't much action to record but I was delighted to have been able to see these creatures at last. This is the same species that has managed to establish small colonies in certain British docklands and on Ongar Station. These scorpions are essentially harmless (their sting has been equated to that of a bee but you would probably need to handle one to take the risk of being stung) as they will run away when disturbed and you would be unlikely to see them unless you search in the middle of the night.
