Nepal celebrated the 'Day of the Dog' on Wednesday (November 7), honouring dogs from every walk of life, including stray and abandoned dogs, who were fed and treated by vets.

To celebrate the Nepalese Hindu festival of Kukur Tihar or 'Day of the Dog', dogs from everywhere in the country are adorned with garlands and vermilion, and also receive delicious foods or treats as sacred animals.

The animal welfare organisation Animal Nepal took this further by taking care of stray and abandoned dogs, by feeding, decorating and treating them for injuries.

The festival day of Kukur Tihar falls on the second day of a five day religious holiday, and honours dogs who are considered messengers of Yamaraj, the Hindu god of death.

The second day of the five day long Yama Panchak is being celebrated among the Hindu communities worshiping the dogs. As the day Kukur Tihar is devoted to dogs, which is considered as the messenger of death or Yamaraj, people worship the dogs wearing garland of flower, putting Tika on forehead and offering delicious foods.The dogs are used to be worshipped as the representation of the Hindu god Bhairav on the second day of five day long Tihar.Likewise, the third day is dedicated to the cow, which is considered as the representation of the goddess of wealth, Laxmi. Similarly, the fourth day is celebrated worshiping the bulls as the representation of the earth and the fifth day or the final day of Tihar is dedicated to sisters honoring their brothers.The festival was celebrated at the Animal welfare organisation - Animal Nepal which takes care of the street dogs and abandoned dogs.
