A knife-wielding attacker who fatally stabbed a 74-year-old man and injured two more in a “terror-related” incident in downtown Melbourne died in hospital on Friday (November 9) from gunshot wounds.

Australian special operations police were filmed from nearby office buildings as they loaded large rifles and proceeded to raid the Bourke St. crime scene. “They’ve got guns out, they’re strapping up with vests,” onlookers explain, while plainclothes agents begin creeping between unwitting pedestrians.

Islamic State is claiming responsibility for the attack. The perpetrator Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, 30, had earlier blown up a vehicle with gas cylinders, causing no injuries or fatalities.

He was known to police and Australia’s ASIO intelligence agency.
