Ancient Mongolian White Stupa

White stupa, Mongolia
The scarp of Tsagaan Suvarga is located in Ulziit soum of Dundgovi province. It is interesting to see the sheer slope, facing east, which from a distance seems to be the ruins of the ancient city. Some millions of years ago Dundgovi Province was at the bottom of the sea. The sedimentary light-coloured limestone formation is the perfect evidence. The sea dried up long-long ago and since then the ancient seabed structures have been eroded by winds that eventually changed the original forms and colours.
That is why it was called the “White stupa”. Because it faces eastward. This formation is over 60m tall at its highest point and continues for an impressive length of 400m. The stupa rises to the sky at an angle of 90 degrees. After a large rain the torrent of water that flows down the stupa looks like a massive waterfall.
