Floods at Newlyn, Cornwall

Buy video

Record breaking heavy local rainfall, over 33mm in one day, swept off the surrounding fields and down the valley to the sea via Newlyn Coombe river, bursting its banks in the process. Most properties were prepared with sandbags after previous flooding three months ago in November, although some had only just finished re-painting when this evening's floods started at around 7pm.

Four fire engines attended while police cordoned off roads, bridges and river access points. Locally, houses in Heamoor had brief flooding and roads around Penzance were impassable in places.

No one was hurt but more heavy rain is expected overnight and tomorrow.
