This was the moment beachgoers rescued a stranded dolphin after it was wounded - by a speedboat propeller.

The beached marine creature was seen thrashing around in the shallows next to a fishing village in Santa Magdalena, Philippines, on Tuesday (November 20).

Blood was seeping from a cut on its side into the water.

Seven local fisherman rushed over to help and carried the female dolphin across the sand to a speedboat. It was then transported to the Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary where vets are nursing her back to health.

Conservationist Alex Geneblazo who treated the dolphin said it had ''deep wounds'' on the mouth and fin area.

He added: ''It's possible that the wounds were caused by a speedboat propeller because they were so deep.''

Villager Bernard Gutierrez who assisted the rescue said: ''The lagoon where we found the dolphin is protected by coastguards but there's no enclosure. The dolphin must have swam into the bay.

''Residents helped us to transport the dolphin. It is a female dolphin. We still don't know how it got wounded, but she will be treated at the sanctuary.''
