While touring through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, we decided to stop at one of the few remote picnic sites for a leg stretch. The vast landscape around us was quiet and we admired the peaceful silence and scenery. Suddenly a movement caught my eye and I noticed a young spotted eagle owl from across the picnic site standing on one of the concrete tables. The owlet looked a little confused, staring upwards into a tree the whole time. There was clearly something in that tree that was important. We drove a little closer in the vehicle as walking towards it would have spooked the bird. The owlet was still looking upwards and aiming to make an attempt to fly up into the tree. Without warning the owlet stepped forward and suddenly tumbled down from the picnic table hitting the ground. On the way down the owlet tried to flap its wings but the attempt was a dismal failure. Looking shocked and confused, the owlet looked around and quickly moved to hide underneath the tree. We moved around the tree and found the little owl sitting on the ground, staring at us with its big yellow eyes, still looking shocked after the fall. We investigated the branches of the tree above which the owlet was staring at the whole time. There we discovered the mother owl. Perched high up in the tree, the female owl looked very sleepy and calm, not worried at all by the struggle of her owlet down at the bottom. We then left them in peace.The owlet most likely would have crawled back up the leaning branch into the tree. Attempts like these would eventually help the owlet to get stronger and fly properly
