Oryx suddenly gets an unexpected fright when eagle raises its wings
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a semi-desert wilderness where the scarcity of water is the main concern for all wildlife. Small watering holes are scattered far apart from each other. Driven by thirst, animals travel great distances to get there. Various wildlife species would share these watering points. The video shows a martial eagle sitting at a watering hole. In the distance two Oryx antelope was approaching, looking like painted warriors with spears mounted on their heads. With the antelope approaching, the eagle enjoyed a drink. The big martial had to raise its wings to balance itself while leaning forward to get to the water. The Oryx slowed down and became more cautious. Our obvious thought was that the Oryx would get to the water and due to their size, the eagle would fly off and the antelope would enjoy their long awaited drink. The obvious suddenly got overruled by an unexpected turn in events. While the one antelope slowly moved closer to investigate the figure at the water, the eagle suddenly raised its wings again to lean forward for a drink. The sudden change in the shape of the bird gave the Oryx a big fright. The antelope turned around like lightning and with a burst of speed ran off in a cloud of dust across the open plain towards the other antelope that remained back in the distance. It was very unexpected and entertaining to see a large antelope such as the Oryx get spooked by Africa’s largest eagle. This was clearly unintended by the eagle and continued as if nothing happened. The Oryx stood in the distance looking confused while we were still laughing
