Unaware tourist outside his vehicle opens camp gate while male lion approaches
We recently stayed at a remote camp called Nossob in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. One of the great features of the camp was a wooden structure called a hide, overlooking the water hole in front of the camp. One morning early just before sunrise we went to the hide before leaving for our self-drive safari. To our surprise we found a male and female lion at the water hole. Soon the lions left the waterhole and slowly walked away down the riverbed. For most people in the hide the sighting was done and most left to get in their vehicles and leave camp for their morning self-drive safari. We remained behind with a few people and quickly noticed something no one expected. The male lion stopped and suddenly started walking towards the camp. This unusual behaviour caught us all by surprise and became a little worrying. In this time people started to leave the camp, totally unaware of what was happening. To leave camp, tourists have to get out of their vehicles to open and close the manual sliding gate. Not aware of what was happening, one man got out and casually performed his gate duty. Amazingly it looked like the lion did not see him at that moment. Once the gate was closed it looked like the man actually realized what was going on and quickly ran to his vehicle. The male lion then walked along the fence up to the gate and stopped there, staring at the gate. From our angle it literally looked like the lion was reading the sign on the gate saying “Please open and close the gate. Gate closed due to dangerous animals”
