A dramatic video has emerged of a fire caused by a gas explosion in Ludwigshafen, Germany on Thursday.

The footage, captured by a local resident, shows the fire towering over a residential street.

According to local reports, one person died and 11 people were injured in the blast.

The cause of the explosion is not yet confirmed, however, local media are reporting that it happened on a construction site and may have been caused by workers digging down to a buried gas line.

Police said the main fire at the site was extinguished by late afternoon, while smaller fires were brought under control shortly after.
