Mum and baby elephant stuck in swamp rescued after 48 hours with the help of tamed elephants, earth movers
Indian forest rangers braved swampy lands to save an elephant and its calf stuck in a muddy pit in Hassan district of Karnataka, India.
The incident happened on the night of November 27 when a herd of elephant entered the farms in Kadakarahally village in search of food.
According to local villagers, the mother-daughter duo might have fallen into the swamp while returning back to the forest.
“In the early morning of 27th, the elephant and the calf got stuck in the swamp in Kadakarahally village of Sakleshpur taluk. We got information on the 27th morning from the villagers.
The rescue operation started 27th afternoon by using two earth movers. Since the entire area is marshy and it is very difficult to walk, it was getting very difficult for us to continue the operation.
"On the 28th morning, we brought in two Kumki (tamed) elephants and two more earth movers to expedite the operation," said Range Officer V S Mohana, who lead the rescue team.
According to the rescue team, the Kumkis were also finding it difficult to haul them out of the swamp. “Finally, we were able to lift the elephant and its calf at around 4:30 pm and lift them around 500m away from the swamp to a hard area,” said Mohana.
The elephant’s left foreleg was fractured. As per veterinarian Madan Kompal, the elephant had a swelling in the front left leg. That it apparently broke some four-five months ago, but the elephant was forced to live with it.
