Wildlife in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is constantly driven by a great thirst. Man-made waterholes are small and far apart from each other. Animals need to travel great distances in extremely hot conditions to get to one of these waterholes. A single waterhole can become crowded with all kinds of wildlife gathering at once and sometimes this can cause conflict between different species. The video shows the story of a thirsty hyena on a mission to get to a waterhole that was heavily guarded by a herd of grumpy Oryx antelope. At first the hyena approached the waterhole looking confident to get a drink. The antelope immediately became aware of the approaching predator with some individuals walking towards it as a warning to stay away. The hyena moved away a bit and stared back at the antelope. Another Oryx walked towards the hyena and it moved away again, making sure it stayed far away from those dangerous spear like horns. The hyena then decided to rather lie down and wait its turn to drink. This wasn’t good enough for the antelope. One male suddenly came charging towards the hyena, chasing it further away. It was not long until another Oryx bull charged the hyena in an effort to drive it off. These antelope were relentless in their attempt to keep the hyena away from the water. The hyena ran around in the hope of approaching the water from the other side. This strategy also failed when individual herd members kept on chasing the thirsty predator. The hyena finally gave up and kept running until it disappeared in the distance without managing to get a sip of water.
