A director of a reputed medical institute in India has been sent on leave after he used edible salt to treat a cancer patient.

Ashwini Pujahari, the Director of VIMSAR, was filmed pouring edible table salt inside a man’s body following a surgical incision.

A video shows Dr Pujahari pouring edible table salt inside a man’s body following a surgical incision.

After the video surfaced, the state government set up a committee to probe the charges of unethical clinical practice and misconduct against him.

Dr Pujahari said he had used salt only for three to five minutes on a patient suffering from pancreatic cancer and then washed the area with water.

He had used the salt as a hypertonic saline, a solution that contains a very low percentage of sodium chloride, added Dr Pujahari.

He said he had treated two patients with the salt and both were “fine”.

But the inquiry committee found him guilty and recommended action against him.

Dr Pujahari’s colleagues alleged that he had conducting unethical experiments while treating patients and behaving with them in humiliating ways.

He had also tonsured a patient some time ago in an attempt to cure a patient of his alcoholism, they alleged.

Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research is a well-known institute which serves several districts in Odisha, India.
