A tourist was shot dead by an off-duty cop in Bangkok after a drunken fight this morning (December 12).

Djamel Malik, 41, was drinking at the ''Lucky Shot'' bar on the bustling Sukhumvit Road when he started arguing with the off-duty cop in the early hours of the morning.

His Thai girlfriend, Kwanjira, was also involved in the disagreement and a scuffle broke out before onlookers calmed the pair down.

French Algerian Malik and his partner walked 500 metres to his hotel room on the adjacent road, Soi 13, but was followed into the reception area by the policeman, Senior Sergeant Khantaphong Huadsri.

The officer then allegedly opened fire at around 7am.

Malik was found dead in a pool of blood in front of a Dunkin' Donuts stand. The holidaymaker had suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the shoulder and one to his head.

The shooter immediately turned himself in.

Police Major General Mongkol Varunno held a press conference at the scene this morning in which he said that investigators were checking CCTV and searching for witnesses.

He said: ''The deceased and the suspect were both drunk and quarrelling. At this stage, we do not know what the argument was about or how it started. Officers are checking CCTV from the area and speaking to witnesses to establish the full details of what happened.’’
