A food delivery driver was sacked after he was caught on camera eating from customers' meals and then deftly resealing the packages in southern India.

The video captured by a local resident from his balcony in Madurai town shows the man pulling up on his scooter and opening up his storage box. He is then seen pulling out a box of food intended for a customer and taking several bites.

Once he had his fill, the man resealed the carton and put it back in the delivery box.

After a while, the man again pulled out another carton of food and helped himself before stashing it back in the box.

The video went viral on social media and triggered a debate on the role and responsibilities of food delivery companies in the country.

The man was working for Zomato, an online food aggregator in India, which has now sacked the delivery man following an investigation.

At flak on social media, a beleaguered Zomato took cognizance of the matter. After an internal investigation, they confirmed that the man seen in the video belonged to its service fleet. The company also confirmed that the incident took place in Madurai.

But the company’s decision to make an escape goat of the ‘poor delivery boy’ didn’t go down well with everyone and many sympathised with the man.
