Greek subway workers unearth ancient Roman baths while digging metro station
An incredible archaeological discovery was made in north Greece, as an ancient Roman bath more than 1600 years old was unearthed while digging a new metro station.
The 4th century AD Roman baths were found in Thessaloniki, and were discovered during excavations of Thessaloniki's metro station in Hagia Sophia on December 12.
These formed part of a subterranean space that allowed rudimentary underfloor heating, with the single uncovered stone bath measuring 5.60m by 4.40m and weighing 50 tons.
The metro workers in Thessaloniki have been making regular archaeological finds this past year while excavating new tunnels under the city, with a substantial find in April 2018.
