It was a beautiful day in Key West and the water was calm. It was so still in fact that I was able to easily see the various schools of fish swimming nearby. That is when I noticed several large and colorful Parrotfish. I watched and was mesmerized as the Parrotfish seemed to swim into the clouds that were reflected on the water from the sky above.

Parrotfish are important to ecosystem. They eat harmful algae off of the coral and excrete sand. It is estimated that up to 70% of the sand on white sand beaches have been deposited by Parrotfish. A single large, adult Parrotfish can deposit over one ton of sand each year.
