Traditional Indonesian laundry uses heated coconut charcoal to iron clothes

In a traditional market in the city of Padang, western Indonesia, an ironing service uses burning coconuts instead of boiled water to iron clothes.

The traditional method uses an iron weighing 3kg that is heated by coconut charcoal,

This requires a high level of skill to avoid burning customers' clothes and pants. Despite electric irons becoming more popular and prevalent, the traditional method has endured because by popular assent it offers a crisper finish than a modern iron.

The shop's current rate is 3000 Indonesian rupees per item of clothing, or around US $0.21.

The operator of the iron regretted both the difficulty of finding this type of iron to use, and that it is harder to find people with the skill to perform this service.
