A man was forced to lick his own spit by fellow villagers near Begusarai in eastern India on December 24.

Ramesh Kumar Yadav, 32, who runs a coaching institute in Malipur village, was accused of eve-teasing by a few girls.

After their families complained, elders of the village held a kangaroo court and sentenced him to spit on the floor and lick it.

When Yadav showed reluctance in following the order, the sub inspector of the nearby Garhpura police station thrashed him.

Yadav again spat on the floor and licked it. He was also made to do sit ups. People could be overheard asking him to apologise to the village and never repeat the act again.

A senior police officer Vandana Mishra said the incident was being probed and the guilty would be punished.

Kangaroo courts are illegal in India, but continue to prevail in the villages.
