A man stayed awake and continuously chanted a Hindu prayer during a three-hour long brain surgery in Jaipur in North India.

Doctors said keeping him awake and making him talk continuously was the only way to ensure his speech would remain unaffected.

So, as they operated his brain tumour, the man stayed awake and chanted ‘Hanuman chalisa’ a popular Hindu prayer recited to seek courage and blessings from the Lord Hanuman.

Hulasmal Jangir, 30, from Bikaner, was suffering from Epilepsy seizures since the last 3 months.

Biopsy results confirmed Grade 2 Brain Tumor diagnosis, but he was refused surgery at a few other hospitals citing enormous chances of loss of speech and possible paralysis upon surgery.

He then came to Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur, where a Neuro-surgery team led by Dr. KK Bansal successfully performed the Awake Brain tumor Surgery on him.

Hulasmal was initially reluctant when doctors told him that they would conduct brain surgery under local anaesthesia so that he would be able to talk continuously, but agreed subsequently.

“He had a tumour in the part of brain that controls speech. We asked him to continuously read, sing or recite the hanuman chalisa. His responses helped us perform the surgery successfully as whenever we touched a wrong spot, his speech would get illegible” said Dr. KK Bansal.

The surgery was successful and the patient was discharged after 72 hours.

The surgery was successful and Hulasmal was discharged after 72 hours. The surgery was conducted on November 24 but the hospital released information on December 27 after Hulasmal had made a complete recovery.
