Millions of women formed a massive wall in Kerala in South India on January 1 pressing for equal rights.

They stood holding hands from Thiruvananthapuram in south to Kasaragod in north of Kerala covering a distance of 620 km.

The women took a pledge and vowed to fight for gender equality.

There was also a corresponding wall of men, who support their demand, on the opposing side of the road.

They formed the wall for nearly 30 minutes after 4 pm and dispersed after that.

The wall of women was formed in the backdrop of a controversy at Lord Ayyappa temple Sabarimala temple, where the entry of menstruating women has been traditionally banned.

India’s Supreme Court recently lifted the ban and allowed the entry of women.

But many Hindu organisations have been opposing the entry of women by physically blocking those who try to make the pilgrimage.

Kerala’s elected Communist government, which supports the entry of women, has taken lead in mobilising the wall of women.
