Two women walked into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala on January 2 ending a traditional ban on women of ''menstruating age'' - defined as between 10 and 50 - entering the shrine.

Bindu and Kanaka Durga, both in their early 40s, entered the hilltop shrine around dawn and left after praying to Lord Ayyappa.

The ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a two-day protest after news of the women entering the shrine broke.

The Supreme Court of India lifted the ban recently but protests of radical Hindu groups had managed to block the entry of women.
