A circle of spinning ice was spotted on a river in Scotland as temperatures dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Footage shows a seemingly symmetrical circle of ice slowly spinning on the river Clunie.

The unusual natural phenomenon occurs in slow-moving waters of rivers situated in cold climates.

The clip was captured on January 3.

As temperatures dropped to below -10 around Braemar in the Cairngorms, Scotland during the first few days of 2019, the river Clunie and Dee froze over, creating a giant spinning ice circle on the surface of the river Clunie, as it joins the river Dee. An unusual natural phenomenon, ice disks occur in slow moving water in cold climates. These can vary in size, most are quite small and often seen in clusters, but some individual ones can be several metres across. Ice discs form on the outer bends in a river where the accelerating water creates a force called 'rotational shear', which breaks off a section of ice which then turns and grinds against surrounding ice, which smoothes the edges into a circle.
