Dancing Monkeys
According to the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JANN), the type of monkey used for dancing monkeys attraction is long tailed macaques monkey mask (Macaca Fascicularis)
In Greater Jakarta area now there are around 400 long tailed macaques monkeys that are exploited for dancing monkeys. This extremely cruel practice is where juvenile Macaques are forced to perform (dance, ride bikes) in the streets of Jakarta.
An illegal trade in wild Macaques has built up around this phenomena known as ‘Topeng Monyet’ in Indonesian language. Long tailed monkeys are sought out because they are physically small. Harmless & easy to train.
Jakarta prohibits dancing monkey mask performances. Even though it's been banned but there are still those who do it secretly.
