These Gorillas from Bristol don't like the rain. Jock the big silverback makes a dash for the inside when it suddenly started to rain. Some of the other family members quickly run for cover as well, just Afia and her surrogate mum Romina moved to the hut to get cover from the rain.
Afia is also called the wonder child, as she was born by emergency section as her mother Kera was very poorly. She was then hand reared by the keepers for 8 month, with Kera showing no maternal instincts, experienced mum Romina took over. Kera has recovered and is back with the rest of the group.
Romina, has quite a story of her own she was born nearly blind! She could only see a very dim outline.
She had congenital cataracts. In 2002 she was the first adult gorilla in Europe to undergo a cataract operation. They removed the cataract and replaced it with an artificial silicon lens. They knew it worked as soon as she woke up from her anesthetic as she reached for some food!
