Lions mating is a rare enough site. So when we take could clients on a Safari from Durban to Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve it is extra special for me.


To understand more about Lions mating rituals and the details of this video I have listed some interesting points below:


1. Lions mate on average every 15 minutes for a period of 7-14 days.


2. The Lions penis has re-curved barbs on it causing the removal to be painful for the Lioness. This in very important as the pain is what stimulates the Lioness to Ovulate. 


3. Young inexperience Lions will very often not jump away fast enough after ejaculation which lines them up for a paw to the fact from the female. This again is due to the pain caused by the "Barbs".


4. The Lion after mating in this instance "Pawed" the ground after mating which is to mark territory. Between the tows of the Lion are scent glands that will leave a scent mark when rubbed into the ground.


4. The Lion bites the Lionesses neck at point of Ejaculation. This causes potentially some added pain to her stimulating Ovulation.


5. It is scientifically proven that a Lioness prefers a Lion with a dark Main even if it is a small main she will choose him over a large blonde main. This is to do with darker mains representing stronger genes.
