A boat ferrying 60 people for a river worship ritual capsized killing six in southern India.

The incident happened yesterday in Nandurbar district of South-West Indian state of Maharashtra where the pilgrim died in the same river they had set out worship.

According to officials, 36 people have been rescued so far and sent to a local hospital.

Around 60 people onboard the ill-fated boat were on their way to perform a river worship ritual when it capsized. At the time of going to press, the rescue operations were still on.

The deceased hailed from villages along the river in the tribal-dominated district in north Maharashtra, police said.

It appears that the incident occurred as the boat was carrying more number of people than its capacity, police said.
