The M6 motorway, south of Penrith in Cumbria, has now reopened following yesterday's overturned lorry, which local media said caused more than 10 hours of disruption for motorists.

An HGV truck overturned, spilling its load of gravel on the M6 near Penrith.

"On our way back from Carlisle this afternoon we got stuck in a huge traffic jam for about four hours," the filmer wrote online. "This was caused by an accident at about 1p.m. between junctions 41 and 42 on the southbound M6 when an articulated lorry overturned and spilled its load of gravel right across all motorway carriageways completely closing both sides the motorway.

"When we finally got to the accident site all the traffic was turned around and sent back and on the northbound carriageway."
