Violent protests erupted in Venezuela on Monday after security forces put down a military uprising against President Nicolas Maduro.

Footage captured last night (January 21) shows abandoned vehicles on fire in the middle of a road in the neighbourhood of Catia in Caracas as a crowd watches on.

''Some people started to hurl stones and bottles to create a barricade in case the police came after us so I decided to go home with my dad,'' the filmer said.

''Later on, the police began to fire tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. We could hear the sounds of the gunfire from our house,'' he added.
