Incredible footage of a lone rhino surprising a whole herd of buffalo at the watering hole.

The clip shows the white rhino bull walking up to the herd of buffalo in Kruger National Park forcing the buffalo to leave the water they were bathing in, so he can bathe himself in the cool water.

The filmer told Newsflare: “At first I thought the rhino would wait for the buffalo to leave as it was very crowded around the water. To my amazement the bull rhino continued walking straight to the water without hesitation, the buffalo were caught by surprise when the rhino unexpectedly entered the water.”

“This created a huge spectacle, the herd became startled, they jumped up and rushed to the side, making a huge noise while opening up space for the approaching rhino.”

Under normal circumstances the two species do not associate or interact with each other, however, on this day, the heat made for unusual circumstances.

I spent one afternoon alone at a water hole in a remote wilderness area of the Kruger National Park. On my arrival there was a herd of buffalo standing and lying in and around the water. It was extremely hot and the buffalo enjoyed a relaxing cool down session. It was not long before I spotted a lone white rhino bull slowly making his way towards the water. At first I thought the rhino would wait for the buffalo to leave as it was very crowded around the water. Both these species make part of Africa’s big five animals. Under normal circumstances the two species do not associate or interact with each other. On this day the heat made for unusual circumstances. To my amazement the bull rhino continued walking straight to the water without hesitation. As he neared the water, a few impala became nervous and jumped past the rhino to get out of the way. The buffalo were caught by surprise when the rhino unexpectedly entered the water. This created a huge spectacle. The herd became startled. They jumped up and rushed to the side, making a huge noise while opening up space for the approaching rhino. I was confused and amazed at the same time by what I saw and I couldn’t anticipate what would happen next. The buffalo then froze and stared at the rhino. The rhino couldn’t be bothered and very casually went to lie down in the water. It was incredible to see how much respect a whole herd of buffalo showed to one bull rhino. Surprisingly the buffalo calmed down and both species were forced by the heat to share the water together in peace.
