POLAR VORTEX: Steam fog rises from Chicago River in extremely low temperatures

Buy video

Extremely cold temperatures in Chicago caused rivers and canals to steam on January 25.

Footage shows steam rising up off the surface of the water of the Chicago River.

‘’Temperatures today in Chicago are extremely frigid. When I woke up this morning the weather app said it felt like -23 F,’’ the filmer said.

The phenomenon called ''steam fog'' or ''frost smoke'' happens when the temperature in bodies of water like rivers and lakes is warmer than the air.
