On the night of January 26, residents of Kanuvai in Coimbatore, South India, alerted forest officials that an elephant herd had entered the town.

Forest officials went in a jeep to drive the herd back to the forest.

Just when they thought they had blocking all routes into the town, a mother and a calf did something unthinkable.

They climbed over a four-feet tall divider and got over to the other side of the road.

The officials started chasing them and managed to send them back to the forest.

In many parts of India, elephants regularly stray into towns looking for food prompting a chase by the officials.
