7:37am on Saturday morning, a crash occurred on the north bound 5 highway south of Smokey Bear Road past the Pyramid Lake. Sergeant Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office reported that the Fillmore Search and Rescue team with Ventura County was on its way to train on Mount Pinos when they came across a vehicle collision that had just occurred. Sergeant Buschow said the Search and Rescue team stopped to help. While the team was assisting, another driver came along the road and slammed into them. One of the Fillmore SAR team members was killed, and three additional team members were hurt from the second collision. The condition of the three members injured was not available. Sergeant Buschow said the Fillmore Search and Rescue team had originally been on their way to train on Mount Pinos, the tallest mountain in Ventura County. Buschow said at this time of year, there is a significant amount of snow on the mountain, and that the team was going to perform winter training. The Search and Rescue teams with Ventura County are volunteers. Buschow said they have regular full-time jobs and families, but that when a disaster or emergency strikes that requires their unique skill sets, they are ready to drop everything and go help. Names of the team members involved in the incident were not available.
