Rare phenomenon: Buffalo gives birth to a two-headed calf in India
In a very unusual phenomenon, a buffalo gave birth to a calf that has two heads, four eyes, four ears, two mouths and two noses but one body. The video was captured from a village in the northern parts of India.
This rare condition is believed to occur when an embryo begins to split into twins but stops so that the twins remain attached and is known as polycephaly.
In the video captured the calf is seen to struggling to get up. It is too weak to stand on its feet because of the heavy weight of the heads. Its mother feels sorry for it and licks its feet in a bid to encourage it to stand up. But the small four-legged but two-headed animal remains unsuccessful and is unable to walk or suckle milk from its mother.
People from nearby villages came in to see the rare sight. In India, such unusual creatures are worshipped as gods. They believe that such creatures are incarnations of gods and that they bring good luck.
