This is the moment police stormed into the homes of suspected gang members amid a crackdown in Cape Town.

Late last Friday (February 1), the recently formed Anti Gang Unit raided homes in Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Flats. Members of the unit break down the door and suspects are made to lie on the floor while police searched the apartment.

The crackdown on gang violence follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s launch of an Anti-Gang Unit aimed at forming part of a coherent strategy combatting gang violence.

83% of South Africa’s gang related murder occurs in the Western Cape, with one officer for every 509 residents
