Boat smuggling illegal sand capsizes, one dead
At least one person died after a boat carrying five, including a minor and a woman, capsized in the Narmada rive in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state on Thursday. The incident took place in Sehore district of the state at around 1:30 p.m.
According to police, the deceased was identified as 33-year-old Sakharam.
Four others, 45-year-old Dhannalal, 28-year-old Devki Bai, 24-year-old Sunil and 15-year-old Rajkumar survived the accident and swam to safety. All five were identified as residents of Hoshanngabad district.
Police officials said that the five people were involved in smuggling of illegal sands from Jajna island to Babri Ghat. The boat was said to have capsized due to excessive load.
Officials said that the deceased’s corpse was recovered by rescuers using a net, however, it later sank without trace after the net broke.
According to a video, a few people were seen swimming in the middle of the river. The same also shows a rescue team leaving for a mission in a boat with at least one policeman in it.
In a different incident which took place earlier in 2019, at least five people died after a boat capsized in the Narmada. The boat was carrying at least 50 passengers.
According to reports, the tragedy stuck while the passengers were on their way to perform a Makar Sankranti ritual.
Among the deceased were three boys and two women.
