A dramatic video has emerged of bulls’ horns being set on fire at a controversial “Toro Jubilo” (Joy of the Bull) festival in Medinaceli, Spain on Sunday.

A bull is tied to a post and held steady by men, while its horns are set alight using fuel.

The bull is then set loose and runs around an arena until the flames are extinguished – a process which usually takes around an hour.

According to the filmer, more than 50 animal rights protesters tried to stop the ceremony taking place and a number of them can be seen clashing with the Spanish Civil Guard in the arena.

The traditional event, which harks back to the sixteenth century, is the only festival of its kind, which is still held in the country.
