At least 17 people were killed and several were injured after a fire broke out in a hotel in Delhi today (February 12).

Hotel Arpit Palace, located in the touristic area Karol Bagh, flared up at around four in the morning.

Firefighters reached the spot within half an hour. Around 25 fire engines attended to douse off the flame that had engulfed the five storey building except for the ground floor.

Thirty-five people were rescued from the hotel and taken to the nearest hospitals in an ambulance.

By 7am, the fire was extinguished.

Witnesses said, “It looks like the fire started at the rooftop gradually spreading to the bottom.”

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Hotel Arpit Palace flared up at around four in the morning and the fire tenders were immediately informed. The hotel is located in Karol Bagh, an area in Delhi, clustered with shops and budget hotels. Therefore, the area is quite popular with tourists.

35 people were rescued from the hotel and taken to the nearest hospitals in the ambulance. Out of panic and suffocation, two victims jumped down from a higher floor.



By seven in the morning, the fire was extinguished and the grave situation was brought under control.



Witnesses video-recorded the burning white edifice on their cell-phones. They said, “It looks like the fire started at the rooftop gradually spreading to the bottom.”



Officials are still investigating to find out what triggered the spark.



A week before this incident, another fire broke out in the ICU of Metro Hospital and Heart Institute in the neighbouring area called Noida. Thankfully no one was seriously injured and patients were transferred to the nearest hospital.
