A video of an elephant calf being rescued by people has emerged on Monday. The incident took place in eastern India’s Odisha state.

The pachyderm, who was part of a 40-member group, was crossing a river bank near Odapada village in Dhenkhal district of the state, when it fell into the hole.

Locals, who rushed to the spot, said the hole was dug by government officials, who for some reason left it uncovered.

The tuskers were crossing the place at night when the mishap took place.

According to reports, even though forest department officials were briefed about the incident, locals took matters into their own hands and relieved the distressed calf by lifting it from the hole.

Footage from the operation showed the tusker letting out loud cries as it tried to scale the muddy wall of the hole.

Later, the calf was seen in a jolly mood as villagers paraded it around following the operation.

However, ever since the successful operation, the tusker has run out of luck, as it found itself unwelcomed by the rest in the herd.

Reports said that the baby jumbo wasn’t allowed entry in the group by the elders after it went back following its rescue.

Apart from the outright rejection, the tusker is doing well.
