Bird singing contest with a lot at stake

A bird singing contest in Indonesia takes place as their owners clap from the sidelines to encourage the birds to sing.

Last Sunday (February 17) many species of songbirds took part in a singing competition held at Bintaro Graha Raya, Indonesia.

The birds are assessed on its ability to mimic the singing of other birds- and the more voices they can mimic the greater the chances of the owner winning.

The high cash prizes mean the competitions are taken very seriously. Cash prizes can be anywhere between $1,200 and $20,00 with the winning bird increasing in value.

Singing competitions are thought to threaten the population of wild birds as they are being caught and sold to participate in such competitions.

According to the filmer, "All birds participating in the contest are from captivity" and also going on to say that breeder certificates are not needed.
