Tensions ran high in Barcelona today as Catalan police clashed with protesters during a general strike to back the region's secession from Spain.

Footage shows a police officer charging at a demonstrator with a baton at a square in the city centre.

‘’Police charged against demonstrators who responded throwing objects to them at Plaza Catalunya,’’ the filmer said.

Demonstrators blocked major roads and train tracks across the northeastern region.

The action was organised by unions of pro-independence workers and students.
