Boys risk life by dangling from moving train in southern India
A video of a group of school students performing dangerous stunts on a moving suburban train at Avadi station went viral on social media on Thursday, sending railway officials into a tizzy.
Several passengers complained about inaction of railway authorities despite regular instances of such disturbances on suburban trains by students. There have been instances when students wielded swords and sickles while travelling on suburban trains, terrorising commuters.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has ordered an inquiry, a senior official said, stating the boys will be rounded up soon. It is yet to be known whether the Government Railway Police (GRP), the agency which is in charge of booking cases under Indian Penal Code (IPC), will take any action. Despite multiple attempts, Rohit Nathan, superintendent of railway police, Chennai district, did not respond. The video shows while two boys are dragging their legs along the platform as the train picks up speed, two others are standing on the window grill, whistling. This comes at a time when the Railways is trying to raise awareness on the perils of footboard travel.
KB Senthil Kumar, a daily commuter on the route, said school and college students were regular nuisance on suburban trains, adding, “Authorities should take strict action.”
Due to multiple similar incidents by college students, RPF had taken a decision to meet principals of colleges in and around Chennai. As a preliminary step, warnings were issued to students while repeat offenders would lose their passes, RPF officials said. RPF has also conducted several awareness drives. However, passengers feel posting uniformed personnel at stations would be the only deterrent to such students.
