Gorgeous tropical butterflies drinking at puddle – or ‘puddling’

Butterflies get most of their nutrition from drinking nectar from flowers, but a nectar-only diet is short of sodium and other salts. The mineral-rich mud around puddles provides a convenient source of the salts that butterflies, particularly males, need for successful reproduction. These beautiful rainforest butterflies – three species of swallowtails and a ‘white’ - were drinking or ‘puddling’ at the edge of a new puddle, in Iguazu National Park, Argentina.
