Indonesian police in Lampung Province, western Indonesia, together with community members, conducted a massive cleanup along a filthy beachhead covered in garbage.

The cleanup was held along Lampung bay on Sukaraja beach on February 21, to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the sea.

The more plastic waste in the ocean, the greater the threat to the sustainability of ecosystems in the ocean.

50 tons of garbage were successfully removed from the beach and Lampung bay waters by a combined effort of local people and police.

One woman interviewed living around the bay of Lampung said: "This garbage is still here from since I was born. This garbage comes from all directions. Garbage here is carried by waves from everywhere. I am very disturbed by the smell of garbage here."
