Powerful earthquake prompts massive evacuations in northern Chile

A powerful earthquake struck southern Peru prompting evacuations across the south of the country and in the north of Chile.

Footage shows scores of residents walking in the streets as sirens go off in Arica, north Chile, following a 7.1 Richter scale earthquake that occurred earlier today (March 1).

A long line of cars can be seen queuing to evacuate the city.

The earthquake's epicentre was 27 kilometres (16 miles) north-northeast of Azangaro in southern Peru, agencies reported.

No casualties have been reported.
